HITTING WITH CONFIDENCE
As you know there are numerous hitting methods and styles that exist in the baseball world and they all claim the same thing: that they are the best. Certain styles work best for certain types of hitters and here at Inside Pitch we start by assessing the athlete to determine what style is best suited for him or her. You must remember that hitting is an art and trying to carbon copy hitters is the WORST possible thing an instructor can do. We encourage different approaches, stances, and extension techniques to see what works best for the individual’s strengths and weaknesses. Having a pretty swing does not make you a good hitter and we want all ages of athletes to understand what it takes to “square the ball up”! Here are some common traits we look for and try to improve on each time we step in to the batter’s box.
CONFIDENCE- Believing in your ability is VITAL to becoming a great hitter. This starts with your approach and understanding the difference between game and practice plans when trying to be a successful hitter. Practice time is when we work on mechanics and we only use certain drills to replicate GAME LIKE swings. During the game we want the hitter to identify the pitchers tendencies and to prepare themselves mentally on deck what the plan is at the plate. What we don’t want is the hitter to be thinking about mechanics because they don’t have time to! We instil that each hitter must trust the work they put in to get themselves ready. We must help each athlete get in the box find the mindset that allows them to focus on the ball, release point and spin of the pitch being thrown.
BASEBALL SPECIFIC VISION– The ability to recognize and react to pitches is evident in all great hitters. We have a miniscule amount of time to see the ball, recognize the pitch, its velocity and location and then have the ability to generate the mechanics to make QUALITY CONTACT. At Inside Pitch we are constantly working on our athlete’s ability to improve their vision and ability to focus on the ball through drills and game simulated batting practice.
COMFORT- If you are not comfortable then you will NOT hit. Period!!!!. This is where our motto of “Practice makes Permanent” must be utilized in order to be successful. Quality repetition mixed with the right quantity is the key to being comfortable and consistent. In order to achieve this we insist each athlete focus on their REACTIVE STRENGTH AND ABILITIES. The athlete must be comfortable both physically and mentally as the game will constantly challenge the hitter’s ability to react to different situations.
ATHLETIC ENHANCMENT- This includes strength, flexibility and mobility of the hitter. If you lack in any of these areas you are severely limiting your ability and potential. This is overlooked especially at the younger age where these characteristics are almost ALWAYS lacking. Being QUICK, POWERFUL AND BALANCED is so crucial for hitters on all levels and is often the core of being successful. DON’T be fooled by a fitness and training industry that is riddled with low-level trainers who don’t understand your needs, or infomercial you see on TV for some gimmick hitting tool. Baseball specific training with the correct exercises, weights and tempo can help in becoming a more dynamic balanced hitter and this can begin at an early age. Flexibility routines and functional strength should be incorporated as early as tee ball and will greatly improve the athletic ability of each hitter greatly. When you come down to Inside Pitch this will be the first assessment we will conduct in order to make the hitting process develop quicker.
